Reflections from the 2016 Fair Ambassador

May I first extend my gratitude for the many hours spent by a community of dedicated volunteers and participating exhibitors to ensure the success of the Port Hope Fair annually.

The Port Hope Fair is a family tradition. I remember attending the Fair at a very young age, and then exhibiting my own drawings and vegetables. In the years that I was a 4H member, I showed my dairy calves. As a volunteer, I enjoyed interacting with my fellow volunteers, the fair patrons, and especially with the children in the agricultural education tent. Who knew that agriculture and the Fair experience would immeasurably influence my life and lead to my studies of Biological Sciences at the University of Guelph.

I am extremely grateful and honoured to have represented the Port Hope Fair as ambassador for this 2016-2017 year. Throughout my time as ambassador, I have experienced a number of memorable events. At the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies Convention, I met fellow ambassadors from across Ontario, and was able to develop my public speaking and interview skills. This has helped me prepare for the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto.

I would like to thank the Port Hope Fair and the Ambassador Committee for their tremendous support and for this remarkable experience. My time as ambassador has been inspiring and has contributed to my personal growth. It has helped prepare me for my future endeavours.

Kara Harman,

Port Hope Fair Ambassador, 2016-2017

Reflections from the 2015 Fair Ambassador

The Port Hope Fair is one of my favourite local events. Without the mesmerizing lights, spectacular sights and sounds, my September would not be complete. I was first involved in the fair in grade ten when I joined the group of volunteers working on the fair’s setup. From that point on, I knew that I wanted to involve myself more. That’s exactly what the Ambassador program has allowed me to do.

The Ambassador program has broadened my agricultural horizons. It has also helped me to gain a vision for what I want to accomplish. I attended the OAAS conference with the other ambassadors from across Ontario, and it was there that I saw a new side of me as I conversed with my fellow ambassadors. My public speaking and interviews skills continue to improve with every step of my ambassador journey as I am given various opportunities to truly get involved with the fair. I can’t think of a more pleasurable way to mature and grow my confidence.

This experience has inspired and motivated me every step of the way. I have gained so many amazing role models including Port Hope Fair’s previous ambassador, wonder woman herself, Meghan Taylor.  She’s always willing to lend a hand and always takes time to let you know she’s cheering for you. I hope to one day be even half the woman she is and to continue to work with the fair.

I would like to thank the Port Hope Fair Board and the Ambassador Committee for this amazing opportunity.

Best Wishes,

Emma Switzer, Port Hope Ambassador, 2015-2016

Reflections from the 2014 Fair Ambassador

Port Hope Fair will forever hold a special place in my heart. Being involved in the fair has always been important to me, whether it has been through entering crafts, vegetables, and maple syrup, or through showing my 4H calf. Now, my involvement includes representing the fair as its very first ambassador, and for this, I am truly honoured.

I grew up on a fourth generation family farm and recently completed my post-secondary education at the University of Guelph studying for a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. Many generations of my family have been involved in the fair and other agricultural organizations. I am very grateful to carry on this family legacy of passion for agriculture and involvement as Port Hope Fair Ambassador.

The ambassador program has provided me with an opportunity to express my passion and has provided me with a platform to share it with others. It has opened up an array of possibilities that will impact my entire life. I have developed skills that will benefit me in the real world. I have become a better public speaker, interviewer, and a more confident individual. I completely attribute these characteristics to my time spent as a fair ambassador.

Exciting, uplifting, and inspiring are just some of the words I would use to describe my experiences. I feel truly blessed and would like to thank the Port Hope Fair for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I have been overwhelmed with support and encouragement and look forward to what the future brings.

Thanks to all!

Meghan Taylor
